Frequent claims are made, particularly by those who are devoted to religions, that religious beliefs are beneficial to mental health, providing faith, hope, and calm to a person's mind. Religion may also have certain positive elements from the standpoint of mental health. them were blurring of mental acuity with indecisiveness, cognitive inefficience and uncritical passivity, due to which they accepted almost everything they heard and took simple remarks of others as commands. Singer in 1979 identified specific cult-related emotional problems with which ex-members had to cope during their reentry into society. Religious delusions are not rare in psychotic disorders and may be present in as many as 10 to 15% of patients hospitalized with schizophrenia. This chapter reviews the nature of religion from anthropological, sociological, and psychiatric perspectives.
